Waste on Board | 2017

Waste on Board | 2017

This is a project I was invited to film and edit, but I ended up making soundtrack as well.

Waste on Board is a short-film produced on the end of 2016 in São Paulo, the biggest urban area in Brazil, with a lot of environmental problems, high levels of pollution on its rivers and lakes, and very low recycling rates. The movie shows the community of Grajaú, a neighborhood located in the south region of São Paulo, and it is part of Gabriela Deleu’s final project for the Architecture and Urbanism School of the University of São Paulo. It aimed to integrated two subjects: the public use of urban waterways and the reflection about material’s life cycle, and it was oriented by professor Maria Cecilia Loschiavo, philosopher and full Professor of Design in the College of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo and editor of the book “Design, Waste and Dignity”.

Gabriela Deleu, who invited me to do this movie, organized two workshops involving a local recycling cooperative (Cooperpac) and two NGO’s that develops rowing and sailing activities (“Meninos da Billings” and “Navegando nas Artes”), which were also an inspiration for this project, at the Billings Reservoir. Four prototypes of a Stand-Up Paddle Board were built, reusing 107 plastic bottles on each one, all of these collected by the waste pickers from Cooperpac.

Waste on Board shows an artistic recycling experience to encourage creativity and inclusive and sustainable interaction. Through the reusing of PET bottles, “the chosen waste”, it contemplates the objective of promoting awareness of the material life cycle and the new possibilities they present. Also, by stimulating collective creation, increases self-esteem of the local population, which already lives in a disadvantaged reality for several aspects, but are rich in creative potential to change realities.
