My Chinese Calligraphy Since Last Year is a poetic video register – a not-video-art – of the notebooks I made to start learning Chinese on my own, those are my first steps on learning the Chinese language, in this new era of APPs and DIY, only read digital Chinese characters in a screen would not feel sufficient, so, to fix memory, I appealed to paper and ink.

I’ve been in China twice, in 2015 and 2019, both for shooting movies. In China, without the language skills is really difficult to move, is not just another language, is different alphabet, actually, is not even an alphabet in the sense we know, to read a newspaper you need, in average, to learn around 3.000 to 4.000 characters. Is another logic, and is really intense how the image communicates and has meaning, so, after the second trip I decided I could learn chinese on my own, using apps. But… to really understand those tiny figures I would “read” in my phone, something was missing…. I couldn’t reach without the missing part, which is drawing. Each character has an order to be writen, and that somehow it seems to organize our brain to understand better what this is all about, so I also made my own notebooks for this event, with waste from the college print shop, and start studying.

Minha Caligrafia Chinesa Desde o Ano Passado é um vídeo-registro poético – uma não-videoarte – dos cadernos que fiz para começar a aprender chinês por conta própria, esses são meus primeiros passos no aprendizado da língua chinesa, nesta nova era de APPs e DIY , apenas ler caracteres digitais em uma tela não seria suficiente, então volto ao papel e à tinta.

Estive na China duas vezes, em 2015 e 2019, ambas para fazer filmes. Na China, sem o domínio do idioma é muito difícil se deslocar, não é apenas outro idioma, é outro alfabeto, na verdade, não é nem um alfabeto no sentido que conhecemos, para ler um jornal você precisa, em média, aprender em torno de 3.000 a 4.000 caracteres. É outra lógica, e é muito intensa a forma como a imagem se comunica e tem significado, então, após a segunda viagem decidi que poderia aprender chinês sozinha, usando apps. Mas… para realmente entender aquelas pequenas figuras que eu “lia” no meu telefone, algo estava faltando…. Não conseguia alcançar sem a parte que faltava, que é o desenho. Cada caracter tem uma ordem para ser escrita, e que de alguma forma parece organizar nosso cérebro para entender melhor do que se trata, então também fiz meus próprios cadernos para esse evento, com resíduos da gráfica da faculdade, e comecei a estudar.
